A wonderful natural waterbirth story

Throughout my pregnancy I managed to avoid most of the aches and pains that other pregnant women complained of. I was fairly strict with my daily yoga exercises and believe they were behind my easy pregnancy and labour.

When the big day finally arrived I kept very relaxed and calm despite this being my first baby. I felt well prepared both physically and mentally for labour after months of practicing relaxation and stretching and strengthening my body. The confidence I had gained from the training meant I was free of tension and anxiety when things began, allowing labour to progress fairly quickly and easily. Simone’s birth preparation yoga training was invaluable and I’m reminded every time I hear about other people’s seemingly terrifying labours.

I was in labour for about 10 hours. I remember having dinner and having to pause for the contractions, being thankful that they’d finally started. Throughout the evening as things progressed, my partner Craig and I were very relaxed. I got into the birth pool after about 5 hours, which was bliss, the difference I felt was huge, the water supported me so well and I was able to move about a bit more. During that time the intensity of the contractions increased hugely. I became more focussed and I was in my own little world. The midwives arrived and were happy to remain in the background, letting Craig and I get on with it, just checking my blood pressure and the baby’s heartbeat when needed. They could see that we were both relaxed into our roles during labour and stayed out of the way pretty much until my son was born. I got out of the pool to try to go to the toilet when we realised the second stage was beginning. It took another 45 minutes of shouting though the contractions on all fours on my couch before Sonny was born. All 9lb 3.5 oz of him!

I’d managed to give birth with no pain relief or need for stitches, I know I would not have been able to do it without Simone’s guidance and training. We knew it was important for Craig to have a role aside from making cups of tea, and Simone made sure he was confident in helping me breathe, making me comfortable and helping relieve pain with the use of acupressure.
